An Advent Tradition: the Ligawka

Continuing this series on Advent, let us revisit the idea that the dawn is heralded by the sound of a horn.

In my previous article I mentioned how Catholic author J.R.R. Tolkien repeatedly connects the breaking of the dawn with the triumph of the forces of light over the armies of darkness. At the same time, Tolkien chooses to precede the rising of the sun with the sound of a horn. This happens again and again in his mythological adventures and not surprisingly there is historical precedence for this tradition of heralding the dawn with a horn.

Ligawka

Recently I discovered an old Polish tradition that dates back to the 18th century, whereby a large trumpet-like musical instrument is blown throughout the Advent season, both in the morning and in the evening. The instrument, called a “Ligawka,” was used to announce the beginning of Advent as well as remind the people of Christ’s Second Coming and to be watchful for “Judgement Day.” It was also used in the liturgy and has connections to the “Roraty” Mass that was celebrated before the dawn.

The Apocalypse
This Polish tradition has specific biblical roots and is found in the book of Revelation. There we find angels announcing the coming apocalyptic events with the sound of a trumpet blast. This sound of the trumpet in the book of Revelation has generally been viewed as a call to repentance and so the “Ligawka” too has a connotation of reminding people to prepare for the Lord’s coming by preparing their hearts. Advent has always been a time where the Church prepares for Christ’s entrance into the world in the manager, but at the same time she warns the faithful to be watchful for Christ’s Second Coming. It is often believed that Christ will come again during Advent.

This Advent let us be reminded that Christ will come again and let us hope that when He comes, He will find a worthy dwelling in our hearts!
